It was first discovered in 1990 by Ho Khanh, a local farmer who was seeking shelter from a passing storm in the jungle.

Its name, Hang Son Doong, is variously translated from Vietnamese as 'cave of the mountain river' or 'cave of mountains behind Doong.

Which was named the Great Wall of Vietnam.

It is more than 5 kilometres long, 200 metres height and 150 metres width.

He noticed clouds and the sound of an underground river gushing (enthusiastic) from a large hole in the limestone,

And reported his findings to the British Caving Research Association (BCRA).

It was formed in soluble limestone and is believed to be between 2 and 5 million years old.

Hang Son Doong is so massive that it contains its own jungle, underground river and localized weather system. Clouds form inside the cave and spew out from the exits and dolines(A Hollow or Funnel Shaped).

The dolines allow sunlight to enter sections of the cave, resulting in the growth of trees as well as other vegetation.

Which runs from February to August after August heavy rains cause river levels to rise and make the cave largely inaccessible.
